RAYMOND P. WHITE SR.

Raymond Petrie White Sr., 84, of the 700 block of New York Ave., died Aug. 17, 1995.

Mr. White was a long-time resident of Norfolk and was born in 1910, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was drafted by the New York Yankees out of high school, captained the Columbia University baseball team, and first came to Norfolk in 1934 as a pitcher for the Norfolk Tars. He returned in 1937 as a player-manager. He joined the Royal-Crown Bottling Company in 1941 and retired as president in 1975. Mr. White was an active member of Sacred Heart and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Churches, both in Norfolk. He served on the board of directors of DePaul Hospital, and Catholic Family, and Children's Services, and was an active volunteer for the Norfolk Senior Center.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel S. White; a sister, Agnes W. Christensen of Orlando, Fla.; three daughters, Mary Jo Strachwitz of San Diego, Calif., S. Elizabeth White Lavin of Falls Church, Katherine White Carinder of Augusta, Ga.; five sons, Dr. Raymond P. White Jr. of Chapel Hill, N.C., Michael F. White of Newport News, James T. White of Norfolk, John S. White of Virginia Beach, Thomas C. White of Orlando; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 21, 1995, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church by the Rev. John J. Dorgan. Entombment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake will be held at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20, 1995. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
