The license of a Newport News psychologist who had sex with two women whose children he was treating has been suspended indefinitely.
Peter O. Powell, who worked for Colonial Psychiatric Associates, was scheduled for a hearing before the Virginia Board of Medicine this week, but the hearing was canceled when he agreed to the indefinite suspension.
Powell can no longer practice in Virginia. Under board rules, he can reapply for his license in a year. Powell could not be reached for comment.
His case went before a three-member committee of the board in March. During that Williamsburg hearing, Gail Narducci of Chesapeake and Gloria H. Woods of Yorktown detailed their relationships with Powell.
Narducci said her sexual relationship lasted from December 1990 to July 1992; Woods said she was sexually involved with him from April 1981 to September 1992.
Some of the liaisons occurred at Powell's Newport News office and at an office he formerly maintained in the Koger Executive Center in Norfolk.
The women say they were receiving family counseling at the same time the psychologist was treating their children. Narducci was billed for at least two 50-minute visits to Powell's office.
Powell did not deny the affairs took place, but he said during his hearing that the women were never his patients.
