FOR ANGLERS, A WEEK OF STORMY FRUSTRATION

Flirtatious Felix flexed its muscles long enough off the Virginia and North Carolina coasts to just about bring saltwater fishing to a standstill for a week.

And while the hurricane that never happened had little impact on freshwater anglers, they continued to be hampered by extremely low water on just about all lakes and streams in the area.

Last Monday was the final day for most coastal anglers before rough seas kept them dockside. Some bluewater fishermen took advantage of the day to record tremendous hauls of billfish off Virginia Beach.

The charter boat No Problem, skippered by Steve Richardson, set a one-day trolling record by catching 24 white marlin and three blues.

Anglers with skipper David Wright on the charter boat High Hopes had 18 whites and a spearfish, while anglers with skipper John Fleet on the charter boat Poor Girl had 17 whites and a blue. The private boats The Hooker and Water Witch also shared in the explosive action. All five boats sail from Rudee Inlet. The hot spot was just south of Norfolk Canyon.

Rachael Perry of Virginia Beach provided an exception Sunday when she boated the season's first citation-winning spot in the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament. It weighed one pound and was caught at Rudee Inlet on the boat The Rep.

But for most saltwater fishermen, all trips were scrubbed for almost a week. A few managed to fish inland areas Sunday, although waters were still riled and catches were slim.

Lake Prince in Suffolk is about the only local freshwater impoundment that isn't at least four feet below normal. This lake is down only about eight inches.
