Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fair Tuesday.
Grassy conditions kept action on Kitty Hawk Pier to a minimum, but good catches of spot weighing as much as one-half pound were reported from Avalon Pier.
Anglers on Nags Head Pier steadily caught nice spot early in the morning, but only a few during the remainder of the day. The water was dirty and fishing was slow at Jennette's Pier. Scattered spot and a few mullet were taken on Outer Banks Pier.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier fishermen caught spot. Spot up to 12 ounces were caught two at a time on Avon Pier, along with croaker and a few gray trout. Frisco Pier reported spot, croaker, sea mullet and a few pompano landed.
Surfcasters along the northern beaches caught small bottom fish from deeper sloughs on the rising tide.
Sheepshead fishing was good around the Bonner Bridge at Oregon Inlet. Spot and croaker were taken from the beach on the inlet's north side and also from the catwalk on the south end of the bridge.
Sea mullet, fair numbers of spot, small croaker and pompano were landed in the surf from Rodanthe to Buxton. Spot, croaker and a few pompano were beached at Cape Point. A few bottom fish were taken around Hatteras Inlet.
A few Spanish mackerel and bluefish were taken by half-day charters trolling around Oregon Inlet. Headboats fishing in the sound caught a few croaker. Action was much better in the ocean where good cathes of croaker and sea bass were reported.
Dolphin fishing in teh Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet was good. Quite a few wahoo were taken by charter craft fishing locations, with the best action well northeast of Oregon Inlet. Billfish releases included five by the Temptress, three by the Phideaux, and two by the Jo Boy.
Limits of small dolphin were taken by the Hatteras charter fleet. A few wahoo were reported landed, and several billfish released.
Trout fishing should be good in the Duck Island area with the arrival of light onshore winds.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 75.5 degrees Tuesday. by CNB
