Police were sent to the Prentis Park section late Wednesday after someone called 911 to report that a man had been gunned down in the street.
The call came in about 10:30. When officers arrived at the intersection of DesMoines Avenue and Palmer Street they found a man in the intersection who had been shot in the face. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police had not identified any suspects or established a motive late Wednesday and the identity of the victim was not immediately released. He was Portsmouth's 25th homicide victim this year.
