HONORS AND AWARDS

The Portsmouth Police Department recently released the names of 11 officers who have received promotions and announced the retirement of six veteran officers this year.

Sgt. Kenneth D. King, a six-year veteran promoted to the rank of lieutenant, will be a shift commander in the uniform patrol division.

Sgt. Karl S. Morrisette, a 20-year veteran promoted to the rank of lieutenant, will be special units commander.

Sgt. Steven C. Sterling, a 15-year veteran promoted to the rank of lieutenant, will be a shift commander in the uniform patrol division.

Sgt. Sherry D. Welch, a 15-year veteran promoted to the rank of lieutenant, will be a shift commander in the uniform patrol division.

Cpl. Geravis ``G.A.'' Brown, a 23-year veteran promoted to the rank of sergeant, will assume his new duties as a shift supervisor at a later date.

Officer John R. Calvo, a two-year veteran promoted to the rank of sergeant, is a shift supervisor in the uniform patrol division.

Officer Jean M. Cook, an eight-year veteran promoted to the rank of sergeant, will be a supervisor in the department's special investigations unit.

Officer George R. Harris, a 23-year veteran promoted to the rank of sergeant, will be the the department's records unit commander.

Officer Donald W. Hicks, a 26-year veteran promoted to the rank of sergeant, will be a shift supervisor in the uniform patrol division.

Officer Robert L. Smith Jr., a 13-year veteran promoted to the rank of sergeant, will be commander of the department's crime analysis and intelligence unit.

Officer Timothy J. Stenger, an 11-year veteran promoted to the rank of sergeant, will be a shift supervisor in the uniform patrol division.

Six of Portsmouth's veteran officers are retiring.

Lt. James E. Jones Jr., a 20-year veteran who served as a shift commander in the uniform patrol division, retired July 1.

Sgt. Allen R. Harvey, a 25-year veteran of the department who served as the supervisor for the homicide and robbery squad, retired June 1.

Sgt. Paul A. Honea, a 20-year veteran who was the supervisor of the departments internal affairs unit, retired June 1.

Detective Sylvia Kaiser, a 20-year veteran who was assigned to the investigative division as a sex crimes investigator, retired May 1.

Detective Beverly G. Gaddis, a 20-year veteran who was an investigator in the department's internal affairs unit, retired June 1.

Officer Ireland Frederick Jr., a 20-year veteran, is assigned to the department's crime analysis and intelligence unit until his anticipated retirement Sept. 1. MEMO: Information for this column should be sent _ along with a daytime phone
