MONIQUE ROBERTS is a peacemaker. This rising sophomore at Norview High School and trained ``conflict mediator'' can be found throughout her neighborhood and at school sitting down with her peers and helping them find solutions to their disagreements.
``I don't believe in fighting,'' Monique said. ``There are other ways to solve problems than fighting and I think that's important today. Society is getting too violent.''
Monique has dealt with middle school conflicts and high school conflicts ranging from fights with friends to a confrontation between adversaries.
Whatever the case, Monique can handle any conflict perfectly most every time.
My full, entire, birth name: Monique Yolanda Roberts
I was born: Feb. 4, 1979 in Chicago
Job: My job right now is school. It's my job to get my education and learn how to be a responsible human being.
Bros and sisters: LaDon Roberts, 17 and Thomasine Roberts, 11
Educationally speaking, I am . . . currently making all A's. I take all honors classes and planning to get an advanced studies diploma.
My school in three words: Educational, fun, scintillating
The killer day means . . . I have woken up late for school, have to rush and get ready and my hair looks a mess.
Boy, I was pretty smart when . . . I won the spelling bee championship for my third grade class.
But I sure felt like an idiot after . . . I had sat in the wrong class three times during the first week of school.
When I have a crazy midnight snack craving, I want. . . a humongous bowl of Cocoa Puffs.
My personal Oscars go to: My mother because she's the No. 1 person in my life, and she's also my best friend.
The last book I read was: ``Mama'' by Terry McMillan
The song of the century is: ``Can't You See,'' by Total.
The grooviest musical artist is: Soul for Real, Boyz II Men
When I don't have anything else to do, I'm . . . sleeping or reading one of Terry McMillan's books.
Best date I've had: All my dates have been fun.
If I could change one thing about me I . . . would change my hair. I feel that I can't do anything with my hair. I would cut my hair so I can have more hair styles to choose from.
I wish my parents . . . would get back together. They had been apart long enough. I miss being a whole family.
The best place for mouth-watering chow is: The Olive Garden. The people sing and dance while you eat. But the entertainment isn't as half as good as the food.
I love shopping at: The Limited. They sell the clothes I like at the price I want. I also like Lynnhaven Mall and Potomac Mills.
The ultimate night on the town would include: Going to the mall to see a movie and afterwards going to the beach and taking a long stroll and telling a friend what's on my mind.
I make special arrangements to watch . . . Saturday night HBO movies. If I'm at home, I'll have a hot dinner plate ready to eat. If I'm not, then someone's always home to record it for me.
The last time I had a vacation . . . was the summer of '94. I went to Chicago for three weeks when school first let out.
I can easily brag about . . . my grades. I've made all A's in all subjects since fourth grade.
In 10 years, I'd like to be . . . a mother, wife and a successful lawyer.
If I could change one thing in America I would . . . change the hearts of violent-minded people. Killing your own brothers and sisters doesn't solve anything.
My hero is: My mother because she is always there for me whenever I need her and willing to do anything. Martin Luther King Jr. is also my hero. He set forth peace between all citizens.
What makes you mad? When my friends become two-faced. I don't understand why someone, a good friend, would tell someone something stupid.
If a film were made about your life, what would be the dramatic turning point? When I got saved in church two years ago. At first I was a wild outgoing person. It has changed the style of my whole life.
I should be a veejay on MTV because . . . I love music and it would be something new for me. (I'm kind of shy.)
If I was a guest on a talk show, it would be: ``The Richard Bey Show'' because it's my favorite and they talk about interesting subjects.
My life summed up in four words: Interesting, amusing, complicating, worth living. ILLUSTRATION: LAWRENCE JACKSON
