Wilbur Leslie ``Red'' Hayden, 71, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 23, 1995, in the Albermarle Hospital, Elizabeth City, N.C.
He was a native of Portsmouth, Va., and was a former resident of Sedalia, Mo. Mr. Hayden was the son of the late Victor Leslie and Eunice Onley Hayden. He retired from civil service as a railroad conductor and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army as a drill sergeant. Mr. Hayden was a member of the Prentis Park Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth; member and past master of the Sedalia Lodge (NU)236 A.F. and A.M.; Sedalia Council (NU)42 Cryptic Masons; Sedalia Chapter (NU)18 RAM, St. Omer Commandery (NU)11 K.T., and the Warrensburg Chapter (NU)3, O.E.S.
Mr. Hayden is survived by his wife, Doris Edwards Hayden of the home, a daughter, Lana H. Posey and her husband, George W. Posey of Portsmouth, Va.; three sisters, Virginia H. Ripperger of Hertford, N.C., Jewel H. Passmore of Travers City, Mich., and Shirley H. Mathes of Long Beach, Miss.; one brother, Wilford ``Brother'' Hayden of Vancouver, Wash.; three grandchildren, Susan P. Novak, Michael L. Posey, both of Portsmouth, Va.; and Kevin S. Collins of Chester, N.J.; Mr. Hayden was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Collins, four brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 26, 1995, at 2 p.m. in the Providence Baptist Church, Shawboro, by the Rev. E. Thomas Hall and the Rev. C.H. Wellons. Burial with Masonic Rites will follow in the Laurel Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Poplar Branch. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, N.C., is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends and relatives at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, this evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and at other times at their residence.
