A police officer fired at least two shots at an armed man in the early stages of a SWAT standoff Wednesday night in Virginia Beach.
The man wasn't hit and the two-hour standoff in Green Run ended peacefully, police spokesman Lou Thurston said.
Police were sent to the house in the 4000 block of Schroeder Court to investigate 911 calls from the residence. They wanted to see why the phone line was repeatedly disconnected when a dispatcher tried to return the calls.
Thurston said a man at the house allegedly had assaulted his wife. She and a child left the home before police arrived but the man refused to come out.
As a SWAT team began deploying, the man emerged with what looked like a pistol and pointed the weapon at an officer, Thurston said. The officer fired at the man. After the man surrendered, police found the weapon to be a pellet gun.
The man, whose name was not released, was taken for a psychiatric evaluation. Charges are pending, Thurston said.
