John Stanley Hestad, 70, beloved husband of Linda Yates Hestad, died Thursday morning, Aug. 24, 1995, at Chesapeake General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He resided at 505 Greenway Drive, Chesapeake.
He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 11, 1925, but was raised in Fevik, Norway. Mr. Hestad was the son of the late Johan and Selma Andersen Hestad. He was predeceased by his only son, John, and his first wife, Doris Long Hestad, and his sister-in-law, Emma Hestad. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years service. Mr. Hestad was a veteran of the Korean War, participating in the Inchon Landing in 1950. He had also retired from Chesapeake General Hospital (ARA Food Service) as Director of Food Service. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Chesapeake, the Sons of Norway, Association of the U.S. Army, and A.A.R.P.
In addition to his beloved wife, Linda, he is also survived by his three daughters, Barbara Cody and her friend, Barry Hartley of Randallstown, Md., Christie Shield and her husband, Jeff, of Melfa, Va., Doris Hestad and her friend, Garland Smith, of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Jay and John Shield of Melfa, Va.; one sister, Berit Letterud and her husband, Ottar; two brothers, Petter Hestad and his wife, Randi, of Fevik, Norway, and James Hestad of Ridgewood, N.Y.; his father and mother-in-law, John and Blanche Yates; two brothers-in-law, Robert Yates and his wife, Sue, all of Chesapeake, and Bill Yates and his wife, Jill of Oxfordshire, England; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Grace Lutheran Church, 521 Providence Road, Chesapeake, with the Rev. William Boldin officiating. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, 524 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be William Waters, James Lunde, John Young, Robert Yates, Jimmie White and William Chambers.
Following the interment, friends are invited to join the family at Grace Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall for refreshments and visitation. The family received friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to Grace Lutheran Church, 521 Providence Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23325.
