The incoming tide pulled three men who were fishing west of the Oregon Inlet bridge into the sound Tuesday.
All escaped serious injury.
The anglers had stepped off the bank of a small sandbar and were caught in the current, said the deputy chief of Nags Head Ocean Rescue, Kevin Zorc.
Two of the men were able to swim to another sandbar while the water carried the third about one mile from shore, Zorc said.
Nags Head Ocean Rescue brought the man back to shore in a boat.
The man was taken to the Outer Banks Medical Center, where he was reported in stable condition.
``It just goes to show you that even when the water appears calm, it can be very dangerous,'' Zorc said. ``You really have to be careful.''
