You'll get a kick out of this.
The third annual Atlantic Labor Day Classic soccer tournament will bring 91 of some of the best youth soccer teams from up and down the East Coast to Virginia Beach this weekend.
More than 1,600 players will take the fields at Princess Anne, Brill and Red Wing parks beginning at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and play until the sun sets that evening, before continuing the action Sunday.
Tournament director Jim Fogarty has spent upward of 20 hours a week organizing more than 125 volunteers who will serve as field marshals, concession sales people and perform any other task that needs handling.
Proceeds from the event go to the club's scholarship fund.
More kicks: Kempsville High placed four of its players on the United States Youth Soccer Association's Region I Olympic Development team.
Freshmen Carter and Chris Burgess joined sophomore Joe Buchholz and junior Adam Schultz on the squad.
Junior Kevin Knott is currently a member of the U.S. Youth National World Cup team.
State champions: Winslow's Auto Sales/Sweitzer's Main Event recently captured the state championship for Class B teams in a U.S. Slo-Pitch Softball Association tournament held in Petersburg.
Winslow's/Sweitzer's was unbeaten in the bracket and finished 6-1 in the event - losing the first championship game to Roofing Consultants, 19-7, before coming back in the second championship to beat the roofers, 9-3.
The squad beat three teams ranked in the top 10 of the USSSA Mid-Atlantic Region and earned a ranking of 15th themselves.
Pitcher Glen Sweitzer and third baseman Billy Smiley were named co-MVP's, joining Ed Jones, John Dennis and Johnny Taylor on the All-Tournament team. The team finished with an overall batting average of .660.
Hopefull, Winslow's/Sweitzer's will stay hot, as the team competes in Salem this weekend in the Mid-Atlantic Region tournament.
Hockey festival: The easy part is over. Now it's time for challenges for the 16 girls selected to represent Virginia Beach Field Hockey in the U.S. Field Hockey Association's 1995 National Hockey Festival.
First on the agenda is coming up with the $800 a player needed to participate. With school starting and the prep season at hand, the players won't have a lot of time.
And once they get there, it really gets tough. Competition in the U-19 division the team will play in will be fierce.
The tournament will be held in Indio, Calif., Nov. 23-26 - so add another hurdle. The girls will spend Thanksgiving away from home.
Making the squad - coached by former Salem player Jolette Salonga - are Naomi Muha, Melanie Harris, Becky Huffman, Maricel Eusebio, Summer Hughes, Claire Reyes, Erin O'Brien and Colleen Bradley of Tallwood; Kate Sullivan, Laura Steadman and Amanda Nichols of Kempsville; Lisa Neely and Meghan James of First Colonial; Rizalyn Asperin of Salem; and Melanie Panza of Ocean Lakes.
