PUBLIC-HOUSING FAMILIES DIFFER

Regarding the MetroNews report ``Public housing on the block'' (Aug. 22), I finally agree with President Clinton on one issue: Public housing should be used as a ``get-on-your-feet'' approach rather than a way of life. However, for the retired and the elderly, I do support this funding as most of them have put their tax dollars into the system and greatly deserve the funding.

You reported on two families that have lived in Diggs Town for several years. One individual had worked until retirement. It is necessary if not involuntary that he live on a fixed income.

However the other family is headed by a woman who has lived in Diggs Town for four years, and it has become her way of life.

I find it odd that someone in her situation can complain about the cabinets and the plumbing. If she is not happy in Diggs Town, on a fixed income, she should relocate to a better way of life. The only way she can do this is to better herself in some way so she can be self-supporting.
