Thomas Alton Umphlett, 71, of the 100 block of Winder St., died Saturday, Sept. 2, 1995, in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.
Mr. Umphlett was born in Gates County. The son of the late James Thomas and Mrs. Ruth Sawyer Umphlett, he had retired from Nu-Car Carriers in Norfolk, Va., and had formerly owned Walter's Grill in Murfreesboro. A U.S. Navy verteran of World War II, he was a member of Cool Spring Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Stewart Umphlett; one daughter, Sharon U. Bailey of Stafford, Va.; one son, Tommy Umphlett of Roanoke Rapids; two sisters, Evelyn U. Hilton of Camden, S.C., and Ruth U. Broughton of Portsmouth, Va.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Cool Spring Baptist Church by the Rev. Horace Culpepper. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gates County or Murfreesboro Rescue Squads, or the Cool Spring Baptist Church.
