Local police are asking public assistance in solving these cases:
VIRGINIA BEACH
On Monday, Aug. 21, about 3:50 a.m., a woman was sitting in front of Hardee's restaurant in the 900 block of Laskin Road when a man tried to grab her handbag.
When the woman struggled, he threatened her with an ice pick and forced her behind the Merchants Tire building where he raped her.
The victim later gave police a description of her assailant from which an artist made a sketch. The suspect is described as black, about 30 years old, six feet tall and 200 pounds. He had short black hair and was wearing black baggy shorts and black high top tennis shoes.
PORTSMOUTH
Shortly after 1 a.m. on Aug. 7, two men went to James Pope's home on Allard Road and knocked on the door.
When Pope answered, the subjects pushed through with a shotgun, opened fire and killed Pope. Police are puzzled as to why this man was killed and who the killers are.
NORFOLK
On Aug. 25, at 4 p.m., the First Virginia Bank branch at 3540 Tidewater Drive was robbed.
They claimed the suspect had a weapon when he gave a teller a demand note. No one was injured during the robbery.
The suspect is described as black, 32, with a large build and weighing about 230 pounds. He was wearing black sunglasses, a teal green suit and a print shirt.
On Aug. 19, just before midnight, Calvin Butler, 41, was sitting in his car in the 500 block of Fluvanna St. when he was approached by two men armed with guns.
As the pair attempted to rob Butler, he sped away but was shot as he was fleeing. He died the following day at a local hospital.
Police have two suspects, both men, but only have a description of one of them: black, 18 to 25 years old, 5 feet 6 inches tall and about 150 pounds. He had a moustache, a slight beard and was balding.
SUFFOLK
On Aug. 23, a cab driver was sent to pick up a fare in the 200 block of Holladay Street.
When the United Taxi Cab arrived at the destination, two men approached the vehicle. When the driver attempted to back up to get away, one of the suspects opened the door and held the driver at gunpoint.
The suspect displayed what appeared to be a 9 mm black handgun and told the driver to give up his money. The suspects received a small amount of money and fled on bicycles toward the Liberty Street area.
One suspect is described as a light-skinned black male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, 170 pounds, wearing blue shorts, a white T-shirt and a mask.
HAMPTON
On Aug. 5, about 1 p.m., four men entered the Hecht's Department store at 1800 W. Mercury Blvd.
In less than three minutes they gathered an assortment of clothing and ran out the door.
The incident was captured by a surveillance camera.
The suspects are described as black, all between 18 and 22 years old and between 5 feet 10 inches tall and and 6 feet tall.
They were last seen driving off on a black Hyundai Sonata. The Virginia license plate included the letters ``ZZK.'' ILLUSTRATION: Drawing
