THE PART of the calendar after school starts and before the winter settles in has become benefit season in Hampton Roads.
And though some events - such as the Eastern Shore Harvest Festival and the Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Auction - are already sold out, tickets to others are still available. Here's a list of some upcoming events:
You can talk to the animals, and dine with them as well, at the Sixth Annual ZooToDo. This event, which features 26 area eateries and chefs' organizations and two bands, will be held from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk. The $60 tickets include unlimited food and beverages. For information call 622-WILD (9453).
Full Circle, an AIDS hospice and support organization, is sponsoring Dinner is Served, an at-home fund-raiser. Here's the gist: Full Circle supplies the invitations, envelopes and signs. On Sept. 23, you invite a group of your friends over for your fine cooking (or catered event) and collect donations.
If you'd like to host or attend a dinner, call 622-2990. You can even host a pretend dinner - you pretend to cook and your friends pretend to eat and all of you give a tax-deductible donation.
The Fifth Annual Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic still has a limited number of tickets for three events. A Williamsburg Winery Dinner kicks off the festivities at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the winery in Williamsburg. The eight-course meal will be prepared by chefs from Johnson & Wales University in Norfolk under the supervision of Patrick Duffeler, the winery founder. Tickets are $200 per person.
The Classic continues on Sunday with brunch featuring French wines at 11 a.m. at the Town Point Club in Norfolk. Tickets are $60 per person.
The Norfolk Waterside Marriott hosts an afternoon of wine tastings and a seminar from 1 to 5 p.m. Oct. 15. The seminar, scheduled for 2 p.m., will cover Bordeaux wine tastings. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.
Proceeds from all Chesapeake Bay Wine Classic Events benefit WHRO. Call 489-9476 for ticket information.
The Gourmet Gala will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. At this event, which raised more than $151,000 last year for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 39 restaurants and caterers will serve everything from raw bar fare to truffles. Tickets are $35 each for unlimited tastings. For information call 622-3317 by CNB
