IN THE COMMUNITY

The Rev. B. Keith Travis, and his wife, Pamela Travis, were among 77 people named missionaries by the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board in August at the Ridgecrest (N.C.) Baptist Conference Center.

Keith Travis, a Norfolk native, attended Azalea Baptist Church in Norfolk, and he now considers Orlando his hometown and First Baptist Church of Putney, Ga., where he is minister, his home church.

The Travises will live in Costa Rica, where he will start and develop churches and where both will be involved in a variety of outreach ministries.

They have two children: Elizabeth Marie, who was born in 1983, and Samuel Brandon, born in 1987. The family will go to Rockville, Va., in October for a seven-week orientation before leaving for the field.

MILITARY PEOPLE

Marine Staff Sgt. Edward Miller, son of Edward J. and Mary L. Miller of the 2900 block of Chesapeake Blvd., recently received a Certificate of Recruiting Excellence.

Miller, a 1978 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, was cited for his service at Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Iselin, N.J. The award was in recognition of his outstanding performance of duties, professionalism and initiative. Miller joined the Marine Corps in 1978.

CAMPUS NOTES

Aaron Miller of Norfolk was awarded one of two $1,000 Director's Memorial Scholarships from the Naval Air Federal Credit Union, Virginia Beach. Miller will use the scholarship at Duke University, where he is a chemistry major.

Laura D. Duffey of Norfolk was awarded a $1,320 Edward Alvey Jr. Scholarship at Mary Washington College, Fredericksburg.

A senior majoring in English, Duffey is seeking a secondary education degree.

She was been named to the dean's list each semester, was named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges in her junior year, and served as a residence hall assistant her junior and senior years.

Itzhak Gartenberg, son of Ehud and Rachel Gartenberg of Suburban Parkway and a sophomore at Norfolk Academy, participated in the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, a program of musical study and performance held this summer at the Tanglewood Music

Center in Lenox, Mass., the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Itzhak has studied piano for seven years.

Lisa Shepardson of Norfolk, a sophomore majoring in nursing at the University of Rochester in New York, has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester. MEMO: If you have news about a Norfolk resident, please send it to Vicki
