ALTHOUGH THE Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools is loaded with boys soccer talent, it appears the same team is going to finish on top again - Hampton Roads Academy.
``You gotta love Hampton Roads because they are a good clean team and it is going to be tough to beat them,'' said Catholic coach Trish Peters.
Expect Norfolk Academy, Norfolk Collegiate and Norfolk Christian to be among the teams which have the best shot at unseating the Navigators.
Here's a capsule look at each of the South Hampton Roads teams in the TCIS:
CAPE HENRY
Coach: Ed Faubert.
Last year's record: 2-5-1 league; 7-11-2 overall.
Top returnees: Sean Luoma, Sr., center/midfielder; Matt Maurer, Sr., midfielder; Brian Keeper, Sr., goalie.
Top newcomers: Clay Birkhead, So., defender; Ricky Frantz, Fr., midfielder; Mark Kelley, So., goalie.
Outlook: After a disappointing season the Dolphins return 12 players and expect to improve. ``We have a lot of things to prove,'' said Faubert. ``I thought that we could have done better than we did last year. Our expectations are high.''
CATHOLIC:
Coach: Trish Peters.
Last year's record: 5-2-1 league.
Top returnees: Brian Conley, Sr., midfield; Matt Ellinwood, Jr., midfield; Joe Marconyak, Jr., midfield.
Top newcomers: Tim Bohlfs, Jr., sweeper; David Bennett, Fr., midfield; Alex Ignacio, Jr., striker.
Outlook: The Crusaders plan to hone the skills of their young talent during a rebuilding season. The roster includes just two seniors, seven sophomores and nine juniors. ``With this year being the rebuilding year it will be good but next year will be great,'' Peters said.
NANSEMOND-SUFFOLK
Coach: Tom Gill.
Last year's record: 1-8 league, 4-14 overall
Top returnees: Ben Goins, Sr., midfield; Nick Garbarino, Sr., defender; Jay Habel, So., forward.
Top newcomers: Gabe Valencia, Sr., forward; Craig Rice, So., midfield.
Outlook: Although the team only lost one player from last year's squad, it is young and inexperienced. The crew hopes to just be competitive this season.
NORFOLK ACADEMY
Coach: Kevin Sims.
Last year's record: 8-3 league, 19-6 overall
Top returnees: Dave Walker, Sr., sweeper; James Wolcott, Sr., stopper; Jordan Jacobs, Sr., midfielder
Top newcomers: Tim Oliver, Jr., back; Robbie Kane, Fr., midfielder, Newk Newcomb, So., midfielder
Outlook: The Bulldogs lost 11 players to graduation, Sims feels he has sufficient talent. He does fear, however, that he will not have the player who can step up in key situations. ``We are going to be competitive in every match we play, whether we have someone to step up for the big play is the question,'' he said.
NORFOLK CHRISTIAN
Coach: Rich Rose.
Last year's record: 16-7-1 overall, TCIS Tournament lost to HRA 3-2 in semifinals
Top returnees: Peters Nichols, Sr., midfield/sweeper; Matt Jones, Sr., back; Brian McNabb, Sr., midfield.
Top newcomers: Ben Doyle, So., midline; Andy McNabb, So., mid/back; Greg Ashe, So., back.
Outlook: The team will have to rely on a plethora of ninth- and 10th-graders to repeat last year's solid performance but expectations are high for the three returning seniors. ``The seniors are just now recognizing that this is their team and they will be good examples for work ethics,'' Rose said.
NORFOLK COLLEGIATE
Coach: Olaf Kampschmidt.
Last year's record: 6-1-1 league, 14-3-2 overall.
Top returnees: Trey Cooper Sr., midfield/forward; Byron Harrell, Sr., midfield; Bobby Mitchell So., forward, William Karangelen, Jr., goalie
Top Newcomers: Brannon Thomas, Fr., midfield; Craig Irwin, Jr., sweeper/midfield.
Outlook: The team is looking forward to a competitive season after graduating three starters. The key could be how team adjusts to Kampschmidt, an interim coach who is replacing Jim Snodgrass, who coached the Oaks for 20 years before taking a leave of absence. ``We finished second last year and a number of the players played in men's leagues this summer,'' said Kampschmidt. ``That kind of experience will help us in the season.''
