Portsmouth students will get the day off today to participate in a ``Celebration of Quality,'' a parade and Downtown ceremony to honor the Portsmouth Public Schools as a recipient of the 1994 U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award.
The parade will step off at 12:30 p.m. at Washington Street and proceed to Riverfront Park. School bands, drill teams and other student organization will participate along with community leaders and school officials.
An official ceremony will be held immediately following the parade at Veterans Riverfront Park.
Virginia's two U.S. senators, Charles S. Robb and John W. Warner, will make special presentations to the Portsmouth schools. Other special guests will include State Superintendent of Public Instruction William C. Bosher Jr. and State Secretary of Education Beverly Srgo. Master of ceremonies will be Irvine B. Hill of Cox Communications.
The Portsmouth Public School System won recognition for quality improvement initiatives and was one of five medallion recipients during Virginia's 12th annual U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award conference and banquet in Alexandria.
The award was established by the U.S. Senate in 1982. It is awarded to public and private groups who demonstrate measurable improvements in quality and productivity.
Portsmouth schools received a Certificate of Merit in 1991, a year after they began continuous improvement efforts. In 1992 and 1993 Portsmouth was a finalist and in 1994, the schools received the winner's medallion. by CNB
