Margaret Crist OBer, 85, of the 6400 block of Eleanor Court, died Friday, Sept. 1, 1995, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
She was born in Berwick, Pa., and was the widow of Dr. Vincent Hilles Ober Sr. Mrs. Ober came to Norfolk in 1947 as the director of the Young Women's Christian Association. She then became a teacher at the Carolton Oaks School followed by Norfolk Public Schools until her retirement in 1975.
She was a member of Larchmont United Methodist Church and was past president of the Woman's Society of Christian Service in the church. She was the past executive director of the following: Ghent Ventures, The World Affairs Council, Young Women's Christian Association, and the Bertha Snyder's Children's Camp and Care Fund. Mrs. Ober was past president of the following: the Alpha Delta Kappa Education Sorority, the Woman's Club of Norfolk, and the Edgewater Garden Club. She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the Association of Classroom Teachers, Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, Norfolk Environmental Commission, the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce-Women's Division, the P.E.O.-AK Chapter, Hermitage Museum Foundation, American Medical Association Auxiliary, and was the past treasurer of Town and Gown.
She is survived by two sons, Capt. Vincent H. Ober Jr. USN (Ret.) of Orange Park, Fla., and Michael VanHouten Ober of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Marianne C. Ober, Peter B. Ober, and Erin A. Ober, all of Orange Park, Fla.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, 1995, in Larchmont United Methodist Church by Dr. Jerry O. Campbell and Dr. William L. Lumpkin. Mrs. Ober's body was donated to the enlightenment of medical science. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to the charity of your choice. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
