Electronics manufacturer likely headed for Hampton

A major electronics manufacturer may bring a $20 million plant that could employ up to 1,000 people, according to local economic development officials. Officials declined to name the company, but said the deal would be the city's biggest ever. City Council members have approved an application to the state for one of 20 enterprise zones to be awarded this year. The zone would include land in the Hampton Roads Center, Langley Research and Development Park and another 450 acres of vacant land the city purchased several years ago. Motorola Inc. said Thursday that it has exercised its option to buy 230 acres in Goochland County as a site for a computer microprocessor factory. State and local officials had nervously awaited a final decision by Motorola, which announced its plans in April but in August extended its purchase option another 60 days. ``That got a lot of us antsy,'' said Gov. George F. Allen, whose first big economic development project bombed last year when the Walt Disney Co. abandoned plans to build a theme park in Northern Virginia. (Associated Press) TWA plans to replace East Coast commuter line

Trans World Airlines plans to replace its struggling East Coast commuter airline in November with the company that has been flying commuter routes to and from its St. Louis hub. TWA restructured its Trans World Express unit last year. The commuter line is to stop flying Nov. 6. The company's 330 employees will be laid off, although they may apply for jobs at Trans States Airlines. The independently owned Trans States will take over flying passengers from eight Eastern cities to link up with TWA flights at New York's JFK International Airport. The existing commuter carrier flies five flights a day between JFK and Norfolk International Airport. (AP) ValuJet expands service at Newport News airport

ValuJet Airlines will add a daily round-trip flight between Atlanta and Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport, the airport announced Thursday. The added flight will start Oct. 25. Since July 11, ValuJet has flown three flights daily between Newport News and Atlanta, where passengers can connect with flights to ValuJet's 25 other destinations. ValuJet is adding a flight because it has been selling more than 90 percent of the seats on its current flights. (Staff) by CNB
