Brad Jones, left, and Mike Wirth, volunteers in a search Wednesday
night and Thursday morning for a missing 2-year-old boy, check a map
before setting out on a renewed search in Virginia Beach. The
17-hour search ended with the discovery of the boy's body Thursday
in the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River. Dozens of police and
rescue workers - many working off duty - scoured the Pembroke Lakes
area after Jake Slayton, son of a city police officer, disappeared
from his home. Jake's death is believed to be an accidental
drowning, police said. His body will be examined at the Norfolk
Medical Examiner's office. Police searched by land, air and water
for Jake, reported missing at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Special dogs were
requested to help the city's police canines track the toddler.
