The school district will ring in the new school year with a parade on Friday. School Board members, district staffers, city residents and students will celebrate a quality management award Portsmouth earned last spring.
The board gave students the day off from school. Many of them will participate in the parade as it travels along Washington Street to Crawford Parkway. Festivities begin at 12:30 p.m.
After the parade, organizers will gather at Veterans Riverfront Park for special presentations by U.S. Sens. Charles Robb and John Warner.
In April, the district received a U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Award for Virginia. The Coast Guard Finance Center in Chesapeake also was among the five winners in the state. The annual award recognizes efforts to become more efficient and responsive to citizens. by CNB
