Outstanding lead actor in a drama series - Mandy Patinkin, ``Chicago Hope''; Anthony Edwards and George Clooney, ``ER''; Dennis Franz and Jimmy Smits, ``NYPD Blue.'' Should win - Edwards. As the dedicated Dr. Mark Green, he's the guy who holds this drama together. Will win - Patinkin. Upset.
Outstanding lead actress in a drama series - Sherry Stringfield, ``ER''; Angela Lansbury, ``Murder, She Wrote''; Claire Danes, ``My So-Called Life''; Kathy Baker, ``Picket Fences''; Cicely Tyson, ``Sweet Justice.'' Should win - Danes. She was radiant as the 16-year-old in the best drama seen on network TV in the last five seasons. Will win - Lansbury. After 15 nominations, she's due - a consolation prize for losing her Sunday night time slot on CBS.
Outstanding lead actor in a comedy series - Kelsey Grammer, ``Frasier''; Garry Shandling, ``The Larry Sanders Show Starring Garry Shandling''; Paul Reiser, ``Mad About You''; John Goodman, ``Roseanne''; Jerry Seinfeld, ``Seinfeld.'' Should win - Shandling. He's superb playing a neurotic TV talk show host on a satirical series that gets better with every episode. Will win - Grammer. Hollywood loves this guy.
Outstanding lead actress in a comedy series - Cybill Shepherd, ``Cybill''; Ellen Degeneres, ``Ellen''; Helen Hunt, ``Mad About You,'' Candice Bergen, ``Murphy Brown''; Roseanne, ``Roseanne.'' Should win - Hunt. Without her, ``Mad About You,'' the most overrated sitcom on TV, wouldn't have an ounce of sparkle. Will win - Hunt.
Outstanding comedy series - ``Frasier,'' NBC; ``Friends,'' NBC; ``The Larry Sanders Show Starring Garry Shandling,'' HBO; ``Mad About You,'' NBC; ``Seinfeld,'' NBC. Should win - Shandling's show on HBO. The scripts are marvelous, the acting four-star. Best sitcom on the tube. Will win - ``The Larry Sanders Show Starring Garry Shandling.'' About time.
Outstanding drama series - ``Chicago Hope,'' CBS; ``ER,'' NBC; ``Law & Order,'' NBC; ``NYPD Blue,'' ABC; ``The X-Files,'' Fox. Should win - ``Law & Order.'' Actors come and go on this series, but the quality never suffers. Week in and week out, nobody does drama better than producer Dick Wolf. Will win - ``NYPD Blue.'' It's the Emmy producer Stephen Bochco deserved a year ago.
Outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series - Jason Alexander, ``Seinfeld''; David Hyde Pierce, ``Frasier''; Michael Richards, ``Seinfeld''; David Schwimmer, ``Friends''; Rip Torn, ``The Larry Sanders Show Starring Garry Shandling.'' Should win - Torn. As Arte the producer, you see Torn the actor who can handle it all - heavy drama and the fluffy stuff, too. Will win - Pierce. His Dr. Niles Crane character will be irresistible to the voters,
Outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series - Christine Baranski, ``Cybill''; Lisa Kudrow, ``Friends''; Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, ``Seinfeld''; Liz Torres, ``The John Larrouquette Show''; Laurie Metcalf, ``Roseanne.'' Should win - Baranski. Playing the lovable cynic, Maryann Thorpe, she's the one who keeps this CBS series afloat. Will win - Louis-Dreyfuss.
Outstanding supporting actor in a drama series - Hector Elizondo, ``Chicago Hope''; James Earl Jones, ``Under One Roof''; Eriq La Salle and Noah Wyle, ``ER''; Ray Walston, ``Picket Fences.'' Should win - Walston as the wise ol' Judge Henry Bone, the soul and stability of his series. Will win - La Salle.
Outstanding supporting actress in a drama series - Barbara Babcock, ``Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman''; Tyne Daly, ``Christy''; Sharon Lawrence and Gail O'Grady, ``NYPD Blue''; Julianna Marguiles, ``ER.'' Should win - Lawrence. She had a great year playing Sylvia Costas, what with doing a nude shower scene with Dennis Franz, getting married and locking up bad guys. Will win - Lawrence.
Outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or special - Raul Julia, ``The Burning Season''; James Woods, ``Indictment: The McMartin Trial''; John Goodman, ``Kingfish: The Story of Huey P. Long''; John Lithgow, ``My Brother's Keeper''; Charles S. Dutton, ``The Piano Lesson.'' Should win - Dutton. Wonderful performance as a man who sees his future tied up in the worth of a family's old piano. Will win - A posthumous honor to Julia who had a difficult shoot in jungle conditions while in failing health.
Outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or special - Diane Keaton, ``Amelia Earhart: The Final Flight''; Anjelica Houston, ``Buffalo Girls''; Alfre Woodward, ``The Piano Lesson''; Glenn Close, ``Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story''; Sally Field, ``A Woman of Independent Means.'' Should win - W&M grad Close, a five-time nominee, for showing the pain that comes with emerging from the closet while in uniform. Will win - Field. Like the Oscar voters, the Emmy crowd really loves her, too.
Outstanding miniseries or special - ``Buffalo Girls,'' CBS; ``Children of the Dust,'' CBS; ``Joseph,'' TNT; ``Martin Chuzzlewit,'' PBS; ``A Woman of Independent Means,'' NBC. Should win - ``Joseph.'' The best of TNT's epic stories of the Bible. Will win - ``Martin Chuzzlewit.'' Tough to beat PBS in this category with the weakest field in years.
Outstanding variety, music or comedy series - ``Dennis Miller Live,'' HBO; ``Late Show With David Letterman,'' CBS; ``MTV Unplugged,'' MTV; ``Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher,'' Comedy Central; ``The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,'' NBC. Should win - Maher with ``Politically Incorrect,'' the liveliest, hippest talk show on TV. Will win - ``The Tonight Show.'' Another blow to Letterman, whose slump still hasn't bottomed out.
Outstanding variety, music or comedy special - ``The 67th Annual Academy Awards,'' ABC; ``American Film Institute Salute to Steven Spielberg,'' NBC; ``Barbra Streisand: The Concert,'' HBO; ``A Comedy Salute to Andy Kaufman,'' NBC; ``Eagles Hell Freezes Over,'' MTV. Should win - Streisand. Her concert was flawless television. Will win - Streisand.
Outstanding children's program - ``Avonlea,'' The Disney Channel; ``In Search of Dr. Seuss,'' TNT; ``Lamb Chop in the Haunted Studio,'' PBS, ``Smart Kids,'' Fox; ``The World Wildlife Fund Presents Going, Going, Gone! Animals in Danger,'' HBO. Should win - HBO for the series that made it easy for kids to understand how and why we are coldly exterminating some species for profit. Will win - ``Avonlea.''
