THANKS TO THE NORTHEAST WINDS, CATCHES OF SPOT HAVE BEEN GOOD

Sustained northeast winds have produced good spot fishing for both pier and surf fishermen along the Dare Coast recently.

Anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier have regularly landed nice-sized spot, scattered sea mullet and croaker.

In addition to good spot fishing, anglers on Avalon Pier have landed some nice croaker, small puppy drum, a few sea mullet and small pompano. A few Spanish mackerel were taken from the end of the pier on jiggers late in the afternoon Sept. 4.

Nags Head Pier reported good runs of spot Sept. 2 and Sept. 4. Small speckled trout, croaker and a few bluefish also have been taken. One of the largest spot reported this season, weighing 1 pound, 2 ounces, was landed from the pier Aug. 29 by John Swanson of Richmond.

Scattered spot, croaker, small bluefish and Spanish mackerel have been landed from Jennette's Pier. After several days of mediocre fishing, a good run of spot developed during the afternoon Sept. 4. Fish weighing about 1/2 pound each were landed two at a time throughout the remainder of the day.

Pompano fishing has been exceptionally good on the Outer Banks pier. Quite a few sea mullet also have been landed. Most of the pompano and sea mullet action has been inshore in the wash. Scattered spot, croaker, sand perch and small puppy drum also have been taken fairly regularly.

South of Oregon Inlet, spot and croaker fishing has been good on Rodanthe Pier. Puppy drum weighing as much as 6 3/4 pounds were taken from the pier Sept. 3.

Anglers on Avon Pier have caught plenty of big spot, along with some croaker, tailor bluefish and sea mullet.

Spot fishing on Frisco Pier has been consistently good. Anglers also have decked some puppy drum, croaker, mullet, gray trout and a few Spanish mackerel.

Surf fishermen have found small bottom fish to be plentiful in deeper sloughs along the northern beaches. Some good catches of pompano on sand fleas have been reported by anglers fishing early in the morning.

Croaker and spot have been landed around Oregon Inlet by the surfcasters fishing near the wreck of the Lois Joyce on the north side of the inlet.

Anglers fishing from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge have caught bottom fish, gray trout and tailor bluefish. A good run of puppy drum developed in the area Sept. 3. Speckled trout have been scarce.

Croaker, spot, sea mullet, tailor bluefish and puppy drum have been landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. Some good catches of speckled trout have been reported from grass beds on the west side of Hatteras Island in the Salvo area.

Bottom fish, small bluefish, flounder and some nice pompano have been beached at Cape Point. Puppy drum weighing between 10 and 15 pounds were taken at Cape Point during the morning of Sept. 3. Spanish mackerel fishing has been spotty because of dirty water.

Some good catches of puppy drum have been reported by surf fishermen from Frisco to Hatteras Inlet. Bottom fishing also has been good in the area for spot, croaker, mullet and small bluefish. Quite a few keeper gray trout were taken around Hatteras Inlet Sept. 1.

Inshore trolling for Spanish mackerel and bluefish has been slow around Oregon Inlet.

Headboat fishing has been mediocre. Some nice croaker have been landed in the Croatan Sound near the Manns Harbor bridge. Croaker and scattered sea mullet have been taken by headboat fishermen in the sound west of the Oregon Inlet bridge.

Dolphin fishing has been fair in the Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet. A few good catches of yellowfin tuna have been reported. Billfishing has been slow. The best billfish action has been northeast of the inlet.

Wahoo fishing has been exceptionally good off Hatteras recently. Eight nice wahoo were landed by the Release and six by the Hatteras Fever Aug. 30.

Billfishing has been spotty. Three sailfish were released by the Hatteras Blue Aug. 30. A blue marlin and a sailfish were released by the Release and two sailfish by the Hatteras Fever on the same date.

Pier and surf fishermen along the Outer Banks should enjoy good spot fishing throughout September, provided the weather remains moderate. by CNB
