Bettie Marie Newsome, 74, of the 3500 block of Floyd St., went to a place of peace on Sept. 10, 1995, after fighting a long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Newsome, a native of North Carolina, was the widow of James L. Newsome. She was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church and was a cook for the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Portsmouth. She was a member and past president of the Portsmouth Woman's Bowling Association and was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame. She was also a member of Women of the Moose Chapter (NU)966.
Survivors include a daughter, Marie Cool of Virginia Beach; a sister, Dorothy Phillips of Edenton, N.C.; three brothers, Buddy Miller of Orlando, Fla., George Warrner of Portsmouth and Henry Warrner of Williamston, N.C.; three granddaughters, Terri Kelly, Sherri Pugh and Kerri Cole, all of Moyock, N.C.; and eight great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Loving Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Brad Mobley. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society.
