ELY MEMORIAL PARK OPENS: Eugene Ely, the first civilian pilot to fly from the deck of a Navy ship, will be honored at 10 a.m. Friday with the opening of a memorial park aircraft display at Norfolk Naval Air Station bearing his name. Eventually, the Navy hopes to display dozens of its aircraft at the park, starting with an A-6 Intruder and F-14 Tomcat. The ceremony will take place inside Gate 4 near an E-2C Hawkeye already on display. The event also will commemorate POW/MIA Day and pay tribute to naval aviation.
B-17 FLYS ON PENINSULA: The Experimental Aircraft Association of Oshkosh, Wash., Hampton Roads Chapter 156, will bring its B-17 ``Flying Fortress'' to the Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in Newport News today and Thursday for tours and local flights. Named the ``Aluminum Overcast,'' the warbird will be available for public tours today from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and on Thursday from 12:30 to 7:30 p.m. Admission is $4. Several local flights will be held for members of the association. Funds generated during the visit go toward maintenance expenses.
PHYSICALS RESCHEDULED: McDonald Army Community Hospital at Fort Eustis has rescheduled school physicals for Sept. 23 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Patients who previously had appointments through the Portsmouth Tricare Service Center for Aug. 13 will receive priority. Those without previous appointments should call 677-6000 beginning Thursday.
SANDMAN TRIATHLON: Traffic through Fort Story will be affected by the Sandman Triathlon between 7:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sunday while the bike race portion of the event traverses the Virginia Beach post. Motorists must enter only through the West Gate on Shore Drive and exit the East Gate at 89th Street.
FATHER-DAUGHTER LECTURES: The Smithsonian Institution's National Associate Program will feature two guest lecturers at the Omni International Hotel in Norfolk this week. Retired Vice Adm. William P. Lawrence, Naval Academy superintendent from 1978-81, will speak on ``Vietnam: The Final Chapter,'' from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. His daughter, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Wendy Lawrence, a 1981 graduate of the Naval Academy, helicopter pilot and astronaut, will speak on ``Women in Space'' between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Seating is limited. POW/MIA RECOGNITION: America's former prisoners of war and those still missing in action will be honored in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday at Fort Monroe's Continental Park in Hampton. Dr. Brooks E. Kleber, a retired Army Reserve colonel and POW during World War II, will be guest speaker. The ceremony is open to the public and will include a flyover by Langley-based jets. A similar ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, where a groundbreaking ceremony will also be held for a POW/MIA monument to be dedicated on Veterans Day. The project is being led by the First Class Petty Officer Association, which raised the funds.

COMMISSIONING:
The Navy's newest fast combat support ship Arctic will join the Atlantic Fleet in an 11 a.m. ceremony Saturday at Pier 5 of Norfolk Naval Station. Sen. J. Bennett Johnston, D-La., will deliver the principal address. Arctic is the fifth ship to carry the name of the North Pole region. It is 754 feet long, with a 107-foot beam. Commanded by Capt. John O'Neill, it has a crew of 27 officers and 534 enlisted.
CHANGE OF COMMAND:
Cmdr. John Miller relieves Cmdr. Chuck Wyatt as commanding officer of F-14 Fleet Replacement Squadron VF-101. Wyatt's next assignment is operations officer of Carrier Group Eight. Miller was previously skipper of the VF-142 Ghostriders. by CNB
