Richard E. Fessler, 72, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, 1995.
He retired from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1977 after 35 years of government service. Mr. Fessler was a volunteer fireman and former deputy chief of the Nags Head Volunteer Fire Department, chairman of the Building Committee for the new Nags Head Fire Station and very instrumental in its completion, and he was also a member of the original group that established the Outer Banks Crime Line.
Mr. Fessler was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army, and was member of the Outer Banks Catholic parish.
Mr. Fessler was preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline Simpson. Survivors include his wife, Josephine Kent Fessler; three daughters, Barbara Gibbons of Vienna, Va., Linda Jo Spicer of Crofton, Md., and Kathleen Sullivan of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a son, R. Leslie Fessler of Chevy Chase, Md.; two brothers, Lawrence and Charles Fessler; two sisters, Mary B. Kemp and Juanita Cruse, all of Piqua, Ohio; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1206 N. Virginia Dare Trail, Kill Devil Hills, N.C., on Monday at 10 a.m. by Father Terrance Collin. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, c/o Rosa Hauck, P.O. Box 3384, Kill Devil Hills, N.C. 27948, or the Thomas A. Baum Senior Center, 300 Mustian St., Kill Devil Hills, N.C. 27948. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge of arrangements.
