PIERS WELL-STOCKED FOR THE DAY'S EARLIER BIRDS

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was good at most locations Wednesday morning. Fishing slowed around noon as the tide began to fall.

Speckled trout, several keeper puppy drum and scattered spot were caught by anglers on Kitty Hawk Pier.

Avalon Pier anglers landed puppy drum, 2- to 3-pound speckled trout, sea mullet, pompano and Spanish mackerel.

Some nice-sized Spanish mackerel were decked on Nags Head Pier. The largest weighed 4 1/4 pounds and was taken on a jigger by Peter Dunlop of North Jackson, Ohio.

Fishermen on Jennette's Pier caught a few scattered spot, bluefish and Spanish mackerel.

Pompano fishing was good inshore on Outer Banks Pier most of the morning. Some nice sea mullet also were taken, along with a few Spanish mackerel and baby black drum.

Pier action also was pretty good on Hatteras Island.

Rodanthe Pier reported good numbers of pompano, a few sea mullet, sheepshead, scattered bluefish and Spanish mackerel landed. Some nice-sized bluefish were caught from Avon Pier.

Lots of spot were taken on Frisco Pier. Some Spanish mackerel, bluefish and pompano also were landed.

Surfcasters reported fair catches of pompano and sea mullet early in the morning from Corolla to Oregon Inlet.

Nice flounder, a few puppy drum and croaker, were taken from the south side of Oregon Inlet.

Sea mullet weighing up to 2 pounds, 9 ounces, and pompano were landed along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. Pompano fishing was particularly good just north of Rodanthe Pier.

Some puppy drum were taken from the north side of Cape Point Tuesday night. Bluefish were plentiful around the cape during the day Wednesday.

Lots of pompano, and a few trout, bluefish, flounder and sea mullet, were beached in the Ramp 55 area on the south end of Hatteras Island.

Inshore trolling was good around Oregon Inlet Wednesday morning. Half-day charters landed good catches of bluefish and some Spanish mackerel.

Nice-sized croaker were landed by the headboat Miss Oregon Inlet while fishing around the Bonner Bridge on slack low tide. The headboat Crystal Dawn reported croaker and trout taken in the Croatan Sound north of Mashoes.

Billfishing improved 40 miles northeast of Oregon Inlet Wednesday, with good numbers of white marlin and several blue marlin released. Dolphin fishing was good, but tuna action was only mediocre.

Charters fishing off Hatteras reported good dolphin fishing. Tuna and wahoo fishing was fair, and several billfish were released.

Pier fishing should be pretty good for Spanish mackerel early mornings and late afternoons as long as the inshore water remains clear.

The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 77 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
