PROTECT BOTH

Regarding ``Politics of greed threatens us all'' (letter, Sept. 4): A common-sense middle ground is advocated, and I believe our present Congress is seeking to achieve this objective.

No one desires dirty air and water, but what standard of clean is necessary and desirable? For example, a person's house may be clean for everyday living, yet that level of cleanliness would not meet the sanitary conditions required of a hospital. Some environmental regulation is warranted, but there is evidence of overregulation.

A responsible Congress would balance environmental concerns with economic goals. One certainly would not amputate a toe as treatment for an ingrown toenail. Let's make sure the cure isn't worse than the disease.

Our free-market system has given America its unprecedented quality of life, and prudence in regulation will enable us to continue enjoying our standard of living.
