SOLVE PROBLEM NOW

In response to an article by staff writer Scott Harper, voicing concern about the nuclear-waste issue, the handling of both naval and commercial spent nuclear fuel has been a great example of procrastination. The Navy fuel is tied up in pointless litigation about whether the federal government can transfer it from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. This material has been safely transported for decades.

The commercial spent fuel continues to accumulate at nuclear-power plants around the country, including Surry and North Anna power stations. A temporary facility at Yucca Mountain is essential. We obtain great benefit from nuclear power. It is our responsibility to properly and expeditiously dispose of its wastes.
