Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fair Thursday, with a mixture of fish taken.
Scattered spot, a few speckled trout and a 2-pound pompano were landed during the morning on Kitty Hawk Pier. A good run of spot developed during the afternoon.
A few spot and small bluefish were taken throughout the day from Avalon Pier. Spot, small bluefish, pompano and a few Spanish mackerel were caught by anglers on Nags Head Pier.
A few spot, bluefish and speckled trout were landed on Jennette's Pier. Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught lots of small black drum, a few pompano, several trout, scattered spot and a 9.75-pound albacore.
South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported nice spot, keeper puppy drum and tailor bluefish taken. A few bluefish, spot, flounder and puppy drum were landed on Avon Pier. Some blues and pompano were decked on Frisco Pier.
A mixture of small bottom fish and a few puppy drum were landed by surfcasters along the northern beaches. The best action was on the incoming tide.
Some nice croaker weighing as much as 3 pounds, and some big sea mullet were beached along the north side of Oregon Inlet. Small bottom fish, bluefish and a few puppy drum were taken from the south side.
Tailor bluefish and keeper puppy drum were landed by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton. Some puppy drum were taken at Cape Point.
Plenty of keeper gray trout were landed from the Hatteras Inlet beach Wednesday night. Bluefish and puppy drum were taken during the day Thursday.
Inshore trolling was slow around Oregon Inlet Thursday, which is usual on a day with a southeast wind.
Headboat catches were mediocre, with a few flounder and pigfish taken from the Oregon Inlet area, and scattered croaker taken from Croatan Sound.
Dolphin fishing was good in the Gulf Stream off Oregon Inlet. Scattered tuna were taken and six billfish were released. The fish were taken from various locations.
Blue water charters off Hatteras landed plenty of dolphin and fair numbers of wahoo. Four blue marlin were released by the Hatteras fleet.
Bottom fishing should be good from piers and in the surf along the Outer Banks over the weekend.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 75 degrees Thursday. by CNB
