Strong northeast winds and rough seas brought pier fishing to a halt along the northern beaches Saturday. Very few anglers fished, and catches were meager. A few fish were taken south of Oregon Inlet on Rodanthe Pier. Anglers there landed a few nice croaker and small bluefish. Avon Pier reported no action. A few nice spot were landed on Frisco Pier.
Surf fishing was slow Saturday from Corolla to Oregon Inlet because of heavy surf. Some puppy drum, spot and trout were taken from the south side of Oregon Inlet. Action was nil from Rodanthe to Buxton. A few puppy drum were beached at Cape Point. Puppy drum also were taken along with small bluefish along the beach from Ramp 55 to Hatteras Inlet.
No boats went offshore Saturday. Half-day charters inside Oregon Inlet produced lots of nice keeper bluefish during the morning.
The wind eased a little and sea conditions improved Sunday morning. As the day progressed, pier fishing improved.
Kitty Hawk Pier reported speckled trout, nice croaker, some spot, and a few puppy drum taken.
Anglers on Avalon Pier landed a few spot, trout, toadfish and croaker during the afternoon.
Scattered spot, a few speckled trout and puppy drum weighing as much as 12 pounds were taken on Nags Head Pier.
A 6-pound black drum, a few spot, and some small puppy drum were caught by anglers on Jennette's Pier.
Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier landed croaker weighing as much as 1 pound, 14 ounces, on cut bait from the end of the pier. A few spot, trout, small puppy drum and bluefish also were landed.
Small bluefish, spot and croaker were caught from Rodanthe Pier late Sunday. Avon Pier reported fair numbers of 5- to 7-pound puppy drum and tailor bluefish taken. Quite a few 2- to 3-pound bluefish were landed on Frisco Pier.
Surf fishing along the northern beaches continued slow Sunday. Trout fishing in Green Island slough on the south side of Oregon Inlet was good. Some excellent catches of spot, croaker and puppy drum also were reported from the inlet's south side.
Small bluefish and puppy drum were beached by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton. A few bluefish, puppy drum and speckled trout were taken at Cape Point.
Lots of bluefish were landed on cut bait during the morning around Hatteras Inlet. Scattered puppy drum, gray trout and some keeper flounder were taken during the afternoon.
Inshore trolling was good around Oregon Inlet with the charter boat Poacher landing 50 tailor blues and six Spanish mackerel.
No boats went offshore Sunday because of rough seas.
Piers along the northern beaches reported spot, croaker and scattered puppy drum Monday. Pier fishermen on Hatteras Island caught tailor blues, scattered nice puppy drum and a few spot.
Trout fishing should remain good around Oregon Inlet and in the Wanchese area as long as winds remain on shore.
The water temperature at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 72 degrees Monday. by CNB
