Rev. Downing Henry Smith Jr., 75, of the 400 block of Dauphin Lane, went to be with the Lord Sept. 25, 1995, in a local hospital.
Rev. Smith, a retired Baptist minister, was born in Bethel, N.C. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Grifton. He was a former member of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Eastern Virginia, American Legion, Post (NU)204, and a U.S. Coast Guard veteran of World War II.
Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn S. Singleton of Virginia Beach, Sandra D. Wood and Wanda S. Newberry, both of Chesapeake; one son, Craig Smith of Chesapeake; one sister, Marjorie Humphrey of Ayden, N.C.; three brothers, C.S. Smith, Hig Smith and Bill Smith, all of Ayden; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, by Dr. Samuel Harvey. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
