PARTY TO END PORTSIDE SEASON

The last big party of the season will be held at Portside from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday when the Portsmouth Division of the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce presents its annual ``Autumn Afternoon'' street dance.

``It's just a way to welcome the winter and say goodbye to the summer,'' said Jan Burton, Chamber program manager.

``And it gives business people a chance to network in a social setting.''

Three years ago, the outdoor party switched from a ticketed affair with catered food and DJ music to a free event featuring live entertainment but no food other than what was available through Portside merchants.

``We usually have it on a Friday evening, but we decided this year to go with the format that Portside has used,'' said Burton, referring to the Thursday night after-work parties on the waterfront.

``We mainly want the people that go on Thursday to know that they have one more fling, one more big blowout, before Portside closes Oct. 15,'' she said.

About 1,200 people are expected to attend the fall mixer sponsored by the City of Portsmouth, Commerce Bank, Hoechst-Celanese, Hoffman Beverage, Maryview Psychiatric Hospital and the Portside merchants.

Live entertainment by Undercover will start at 5:30 p.m. Call 397-3453 for more information. by CNB
