Eight high school seniors in South Hampton Roads have been named semifinalists in the 1996 National Achievement Scholarship Program for outstanding African-American students. Nationwide, about 1,500 semifinalists will compete for 800 scholarships totaling nearly $3 million.
Nearly 100,000 students requested consideration for the 1996 program when they took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The program is conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
Semifinalists must advance to the final round of competition to be considered for Achievement Scholarships. To do so, a candidate must meet other criteria, including a record of high academic performance in high school and a recommendation by the high school principal.
Three types of scholarships are offered: 400 one-time awards of $2,000 each, mostly underwritten by the program's own funds; 150 sponsored by corporations, company foundations and professional associations; and 250 scholarships from colleges and universities.
