American Internet users total 3.7 percent

A new survey of Internet access shows 3.7 percent of American adults are online and most are men who make between $25,000 and $75,000 a year. Commissioned by Internet publishers O'Reilly & Associates and Trish Information Services, the survey, released Wednesday, found that 5.8 million Americans had direct access to the global computer network. A further 3.9 million subscribed to commercial online services such as America Online, CompuServe and Prodigy. The most common job listed for those who had access to the online world was sales, 19 percent, followed by engineering, 15 percent. The next three job functions, 29 percent total, were information managers, administration and research and development.O'Reilly estimated the online world in the United States will grow by another 6 million adults over the next 12 months.

Taylor named new NationsBank president

Randolph W. McElroy, president of NationsBank of Virginia since 1992, will retire from the Richmond-based bank at yearend. NationsBank said it will consolidate its Virginia and Mid-Atlantic Banking groups into a single team following McElroy's retirement. Gene Taylor will become president of the Mid-Atlantic Banking Group. Doug Cruickshanks will be responsible for consumer banking within the banking group and will serve as president of the Virginia bank.

Employment increased slightly in July

Nonfarm employment in Hampton Roads rose 2.6 percent, or 16,300, in July to 635,800. Job growth occurred despite losses of 1.9 percent, or 2,500, in the government sector. Expansions occurred in services, up 5.2 percent, or 9,200; trade, up 2.8 percent, or 4,200; construction, up 5.7 percent, or 2,000; transportation, up 5.1 percent, or 1,500; and manufacturing, up 2.0 percent, or 1,300. The local job growth mirrored statewide increases in nonfarm employment, which rose 2.3 percent, or 68,100, to 3 million in July.(Staff) by CNB
