Cargo tonnage shipped across the docks in Hampton Roads continued to outpace last year's record numbers, the Virginia Port Authority announced this week. The authority, which owns port terminals in Norfolk, Portsmouth and Newport News, said that general cargo tonnage is 18.7 percent ahead of last year at 6.12 million tons through August, up from 5.16 million tons last year. Container shipments paced the port's growth. Noncontainerized break-bulk cargo, such as rubber and cocoa beans, slipped 13.2 percent however to 530,669 tons. Such cargo accounts for less than 10 percent of the port's tonnage. by CNB
