I enjoy the editor's columns and The Coast. I certainly agree with the latest editorial. Most of television is lousy. So are most of the movies. I seldom go anymore. I try to attend The Forum programs and Theatre of Dare plays - which are, by the way, excellent.
I'm so tired of sex in every advertisement and everything else. I'm tired of violence, long stringy hair, Calvin Klein and O.J. Simpson.
Where did you live before you came here? Look out! I think you are becoming a ``Banker.''

Attendance policy wrong
I am a freshman at Cape Hatteras School. I feel that I am speaking for a vast majority of students when I voice my opposition to the recent decision made by the members of our school board regarding the new attendance policy.
When I heard about the decision, I was appalled. Putting such a program into effect would destroy the whole idea of discipline within our schools. For instance, if a student were to get suspended, the whole idea for that would be for PUNISHMENT; therefore, he could not make up any work or activities missed. Now, suspension may even be looked at as a reward: he still doesn't have to go to school, and because of this policy, he can make up any work missed! The teachers will have to stay after, and I feel that it is unfair for them to be kept longer than necessary.
It is even less fair for the other students who cannot always get one-on-one attention, while this student (who, remember, broke the school's guidelines on behavior) receives even more direct help and assistance from the teachers. I personally feel that this is doing the students who act appropriately an injustice.
Does it really seem fair to let the ones who disrupt our school be the ones to receive benefits from it? I truly hope the board will reconsider before they put this so-called ``policy'' into effect.

Salvo Thanks to volunteers
On behalf of Dare Voluntary Action Center, I would like to thank the 217 volunteers who were so generous with their time and labor on Saturday, Sept. 9, for the 11th Annual Outer Banks Triathlon. The programs offered by DVAC throughout the year are funded with the proceeds of this event. So it is critical that the triathlon be successful.
These volunteers were instrumental in making this triathlon a success. It is gratifying that the community is so involved and giving that the volunteer center of Dare County is able to continue to provide services and programs that promote volunteerism.
Anyone interested in volunteering, or learning about volunteer opportunities in Dare County, can call the DVAC office at 480-0500.
