MERCHANTS RIDE SWEET WAVE, TOO

Thousands of Outer Banks visitors boogied off the beach this summer.

Riding a wave of wonderful surf that swept across the Atlantic, families and first-time beachgoers couldn't resist the sweet swells.

The Kill Devil Hills Kmart sold more than twice as many Boogie Boards as any other store in the worldwide chain of discount retailers ever had.

Corporate executives crowned the local Kmart's sporting goods manager Jeanne Veteto ``Boogie Board Queen.'' She earned the title. Since Memorial Day, she has sold 9,601 of the colorful foam floats made for riding small surf or shorebreak.

Honolulu's Kmart placed second in sales, selling 3,000 Boogie Boards. The Myrtle Beach store was third, with 2,000 boards sold.

``This little place down here that no one even knows about broke all the records. We blew the whole country away on Boogie Boards,'' Veteto said. ``We did a lot better than last year, even. Of course, the waves were bigger and better all summer.''

``They're definitely the best selling item in our sporting goods section,'' she said. ``They keep the kids happy at the beach. And it always seems they have to buy at least one big board, too - for Dad.'' by CNB
