Booker T. Washington's football team may have to forfeit a 10-8 victory over Oscar Smith for using an ineligible player.
``We're investigating a student who transferred on a fraudulent address change,'' Booker T. Washington principal Joel Wagner said.
The player transferred from Norview and returned one punt against Oscar Smith, Bookers coach Larry Stepney said. That was the only game in which he played.
``We examined his documents (before playing him),'' Stepney said. ``Our ducks were in order.''
If the player is found to be ineligible, Booker T. could be ordered to forfeit the victory. However, the school likely would appeal to the Virginia High School League, Stepney said.
Since it was a nondistrict game, a forfeit won't affect the Bookers' position in the Eastern District standings. However, it would affect their power rating.
In the event of a tie for the district title, the team with the highest power rating would represent the district in the Eastern Region playoffs. Power ratings also are used to determine wildcard bids to the playoffs.
