RETHINK CUSTODY LAWS

Regarding ``Divorce, custody, child,'' (editorial, Sept. 25): For years I have wondered how parents can walk away from their children after divorce. I now see the court system doesn't treat parents as equals and actually encourages a one-parent family.

If Michael Ewing (``What is a day?'' news, Sept. 13) spends 17 hours with his daughter and she is away from her mother for 30 hours, it doesn't take an accountant to figure out who has a day!

It is time for Virginia to recognize and deal with the post-divorce family. One parent is denied the role of being a parent. It is time for Virginia to establish a presumption for ``shared parenting,'' assuming there is no abuse or neglect and both parents are fit.
