Police made an arrest Monday in the murder of a 75-year-old man who was found beaten to death in his home on Sunday.
Talmadge J. Dunn, 38, of Newport News was taken into custody at about 5 p.m. while walking in the 700 block of 26th St., said Patricia L. Mahaffy, spokesperson for the Newport News Police Department.
Dunn was charged with murder, attempted robbery and grand larceny.
Ephrom Williams, of the 3000 block of Oak Ave., was found dead in his home at about 9 a.m. Sunday. Police were called to the address after the landlord noticed a door ajar and called the man's relatives.
Initially police believed Williams had been shot. But an autopsy revealed Williams died from at least two blows to the head with a blunt object.
Williams was last seen alive at 10 p.m. Friday by his daughter. His car, a gray, 1982 Oldsmobile Delta 88, was missing from his home and was found Sunday afternoon at the King James Motel near the James River Bridge.
Dunn is believed to be a former boarder at Williams' home, Mahaffy said.
