IN THE COMMUNITY

The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia honored its volunteers during a dinner recently at First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. Awards were presented to the following individuals, groups and organizations:

Pat Keys, Volunteer of the Year - Most Dedicated Service; Robert Clark, Volunteer of the Year - Food Distribution; Aramark Services Inc., Volunteer Corporate Group of the Year; Bayview Seniors, Volunteer Civic Group of the Year; Fleet Training Center, Volunteer Military Group of the Year; Norfolk Friends, Volunteer Community (Church) Group of the Year; Beatrice Haynes, Volunteer of the Year - Justine's Clothes Bank; Tillie Marshall, Volunteer of the Year - Eastern Shore Foodbank; Garland Bradshaw, Volunteer of the Year - SHARE; and Justine Nusbaum, Life Time Achievement Award in Volunteerism.

These Norfolk residents won awards at the Virginia State Fair in Richmond:

Eileen Wright, first place for flower arrangement - unusual material, first place for strawberry jelly, second place for peach jelly and second place for pickled squash; Eleanor Baumann, second place for handmade doll - dressed; Jimmy Pearce, a reserve award for youth geldings - 3 and over for Beaus Final Edition and a second place for 3-year-old geldings for Beaus Final Edition; and Faith and Jerry Pearce, a second place for amateur geldings - 3 and over for Sonny's Cartel.

CAMPUS NOTES

Dr. Adolphus Hailstork, a Norfolk State University professor of music and international composer, has been selected as an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award recipient for 1995-96.

The award is based on each writer's catalog of original compositions and recent performances of such works.

Hailstork was proclaimed Cultural Laureate of the state of Virginia in 1992. His works have been commissioned by several groups, including The Boys Choir of Harlem and a consortium of orchestras across the country.

Patricia Dillard, supervisor of alcohol and drug prevention for Norfolk Public Schools, has been named a national leadership fellow by Join Together, a national organization dedicated to helping communities fight substance abuse. Dillard was recognized for her work in coordinating the school system's substance abuse prevention programs and for training teachers, caregivers and youth leaders in drug prevention strategies.

Students from all five Norfolk public high schools attended the 11th annual Youth Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Project Conference at Longwood College.

The conference was sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education to provide leadership training for youth involved in the ongoing effort to prevent alcohol, tobacco and other drug use by their peers.

In attendence were DuJuan Jefferson, Alfred Carrington, Shwante Snead and Evonne Nwankwo of Maury; Angela Scruggs and Trejeani Settles of Lake Taylor; Daniel Deloach, Micah LeMon, LaSonya Jackson and KyLeah Parson of Booker T. Washington; Arthur Gasapo, Nick Beane, Kristina Gasapo, Lakeisha Pheips and Jeremy Zamora of Norview; and Tim Hall, Joseph Bieber Nicole Jackson and Denise Jackson of Granby.
