More than $30,000 to help in the battle against childhood leukemia was raised in Hampton Roads' first annual benefit car auction.
Proceeds from ``Jason's Auction,'' held at Harbor Park in Norfolk, will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Andy Anderson, the Virginia Beach auctioneer, plans to make the fund-raiser an annual event. It was his determination to repay the hospital for his son's care that culminated in last month's sale.
With the help of doctors at St. Jude, Jason Ryan Anderson successfully battled the disease for four years before succumbing in 1985 at age 11.
His father's vow to repay those who had helped prolong his son's life grew over the years into a vision to find a cure for childhood leukemia.
Local car dealers donated vehicles for the auction.
Donations in Jason's memory may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Mid-Atlantic Regional Office, 6521 Arlington Blvd., Suite 500, Falls Church, Va. 22042. by CNB
