I feel great pride in my state when I read of new industry being brought into surrounding areas and throughout the state. But at the same time a sense of despair engulfs me because Portsmouth has no leadership and will never enjoy the prosperity for its citizens that other areas of our state enjoy.
Portsmouth has everything needed to entice large companies - land, plentiful water, a labor force - but our city councilmen and mayor do nothing but sit on their behinds and fight among themselves. Their thinking is so muddled that the average citizen cannot follow their reasoning - it's OK for a race track to come to town, but we must not have riverboat gambling. Wake up, people. Gambling is gambling, whether it's $2 at the race track or $2 in the slot machine.
This city needs industry that will employ hundreds at decent salaries, which will lower our welfare rolls and bring tax money into the coffers of the city treasury.
