Herman Elmore Barnes, 61, died Monday, Oct. 9, 1995, in Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond.
Mr. Barnes was a retired federal employee and a deputy sheriff for Cumberland County. He was a former member of the Cumberland County Rescue Squad, a member of the Portsmouth Scottish Rite, a past master of Harmony Masonic Lodge 149 in Suffolk, Driver Chapter 149 of the Order of the Eastern Star, a Scoutmaster, who established Boy Scout Troop (NU)203, coach of numerous youth sports and recreation teams, a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Cumberland, and a disabled veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret ``Peggy'' Barnes; two sons, Thomas ``Doug'' Barnes and Ronald S. ``Ronnie'' Barnes, both of Suffolk; his mother, Mildred M. Sawyer Gates of Portsmouth; a grandson, Joshua K. Barnes of Suffolk; and granddaughter, Sallie Kathleen Barnes of Suffolk.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. today in Olive Branch Cemetery, Portsmouth. Contributions may be made to ILOF-Cumberland Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association. Bennett and Barden Funeral Home, Powhatan, Va., in charge.
