FREDERICK W. MEYER JR.

Dr. Frederick Willer Meyer Jr., retired captain, U.S. Navy Medical Corps, of the 5200 block of Shore Drive, died Oct. 10, 1995, in his home.

Dr. Meyer was born on Jan. 3, 1921, on the Island of Panay in the Philippines and was the eldest son of Baptist Medical Missionaries, the late Dr. Frederick and Ruth Meyer. After graduating from Yale University in 1942 he entered medical school at the University of Rochester, where he concluded his education in 1945. Guided by deep love and boundless compassion, he embarked on a distinguished military career spanning 35 years, fulfilling his dream of helping those not as fortunate as he. He proudly served his country and fellow man as a resident at St. Albans Hospital and a staff surgeon at Bethesda Naval Hospital. After a tour as medical officer with the U.S. Naval Mission in Turkey, he became the assistant chief surgeon at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis. He was commander of the Naval Dispensary, Little Creek, Va., was staff medical officer, COMPHIBPAC AND COMPHIBLANT, was deputy command surgeon, MACV, Saigon, and concluded his career as deputy command surgeon CINCLANT FLEET/SACLANT. He was also graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

In retirement he was a member of the Norfolk Sports Club, The World Affairs Council of Greater Hampton Roads, and was an active alumni of Yale University and the University of Rochester. A friend and benefactor to man and animal alike, he was genuinely loved by all those he touched.

He is survived by his wife, Lucille T. Meyer; his two stepsons, Robert Wilson, and his wife, Sharon, Gary Wilson, and his wife, Helen; his step-daughter, Beverly Rooker, and her husband, Boyd; his grandchildren, Ashley, Benjamin Paul, Laura, Tammy and Stephanie; his brother, Milton of Pasadena, Calif.; and a host of aunts, cousins and friends.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by Fr. Edward L. Richardson. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. The family will also receive friends at 5204 Tern Road, Virginia Beach, at other times.
