OUTER BANKS ACTIVIST, 74, NAMED CITIZEN OF YEAR

A 74-year-old community activist who ``retired'' in Southern Shores in 1981 has been named the 1995 Outer Banks Citizen of the Year.

Glen Miller was honored Wednesday night at the Outer Banks Chamber of Commerce's annual awards banquet at Owens Restaurant. The award is sponsored by the chamber and Centura Bank.

Miller worked 34 years for Procter & Gamble Co. and retired 14 years ago in a home he had built in Southern Shores in 1974.

He helped found the local chapter of the Service Corps of Retired Executives in 1981, served as fire chief of the Duck Fire Department (which he had helped start in the mid-1980s) and served on the Roanoke Island Historical Association's Marketing Committee.

He also is an active member of Nags Head Woods, served as interim director of the Outer Banks Community Foundation, and is a member of the Oregon Inlet Commission.

``I have worked with Glen on several community projects and have always been impressed with his ability to work with people, and his commitment to serve his community,'' said Ray White of Centura Bank.

Peggy Birkemeir, director of the Community Foundation, said, ``He has expressed a tremendous commitment to be involved in this community and is very deserving of this recognition.''

Ron Bennett was installed as president of the chamber, replacing Robert Wells.

Special recognition was given to Sterling Webster for chairing the chamber auction; Chris Toolan for chairing the annual membership drive; Jeff Wells for being tops in new member sales; and Centura for being the top team in new member sales. by CNB
