Carvel Hall Blair, died of cancer on Oct. 11, 1995 at Westminister Canterbury of the Blue Ridge where he was a resident.
He was a career Naval Officer serving from 1944 to 1971. He fought in three wars and held five commands. Upon retirement he earned a doctorate in physical oceanography at Old Dominion University. He taught at Old Dominion until 1988 in the Department of Mathematical and Computer Science and the Department of Oceanography. He served as Chairman of the Norfolk Wetlands Board, President of the Virginia Wildlife Federation and on numerous other environmental boards and commissions. Author of four books, he also wrote many articles on maritime, engineering and environmental subjects. He moved to Charlottesville, Va. in 1991.
Mr. Carvel Blair is survived by his wife, Abbie-Dora, who will continue to reside at Westminister Canterbury, and three children.
A memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, Cismont, Saturday, Oct. 14 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at the United States Naval Academy on Monday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. The family requests that any donation to his memory be made to Westminister Canterbury of the Blue Ridge Fellowship Fund, 250 Pantops Mount Rd., Charlottesville, Va. 22911 or Virginia Wildlife Federation, 1001 E. Broad St., Suite LL5, Richmond, Va. 23219. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
